The Trump administration is implementing "mega" master hearings in immigration courts across the country, scheduling dozens to hundreds of cases per judge per day. The policy has reduced preparation time for complex immigration proceedings from approximately six months to often just over one month. As a result, no-show rates have doubled from 20% to 40% between January 2025 and June 2026, with nearly 79,000 deportation orders issued in June alone—more than double the approximately 33,000 issued in January 2025. Immigration attorneys, judges, and advocates report that cases lasting less than five minutes are common, with valid asylum claims being closed without adjudication and people receiving removal orders in absentia, including some who were physically present in courthouse buildings but confused about procedures.
