Minnesota school districts Fridley Public Schools and Duluth Public Schools, along with Education Minnesota (the state's largest teachers union), filed a federal lawsuit to block Department of Homeland Security immigration agents from conducting enforcement operations on school property or within 1,000 feet of schools and school bus stops. The lawsuit argues the Trump administration violated federal rulemaking procedures by rescinding a longstanding 30-year-old policy protecting schools as sensitive locations for immigration enforcement. The filing cites multiple incidents where ICE agents were spotted in school parking lots, near bus stops, and along bus routes, including one case where a preschool teacher in Apple Valley was detained after being lured outside under false pretenses. Attendance at Fridley Public Schools has dropped by one-third since Operation Metro Surge began in the state several weeks ago, and the district superintendent reported that students witnessed ICE agents in vehicles outside school buildings and a U.S. citizen mother was followed by ICE vehicles when arriving with her child.
