Democrats describe grim conditions at ICE detention centers in Texas

Aug 7, 2026 · Dilley, TX

Congressional Democrats, including Reps. Joaquin Castro and Veronica Escobar, visited ICE detention facilities in South Texas and reported witnessing problematic conditions including pregnant women being deported, infants spending months in custody, and inadequate care. The South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley reopened under the Trump administration and now holds record numbers of detainees as the agency reports holding an average of 65,000 people daily across facilities. Immigration officials denied the allegations, but members of Congress noted increased oversight visits as a critical window into facility conditions. Deaths in custody and allegations of neglect and mistreatment have risen as the detention population has swelled.
