Elizabeth N.: 63-year-old woman with schizophrenia re-detained, threatened with Ghana deportation

A 63-year-old green card holder from Sierra Leone with schizophrenia, who raised a law student daughter, was detained at a routine ICE check-in after 13 compliant years and now faces deportation to Ghana.

Sep 22, 2026Adelanto, CACountry of origin: Sierra Leone

A 63-year-old woman from Sierra Leone has lived in the United States since 1986 and became a lawful permanent resident in 1990. She developed schizoaffective disorder around 2000 and, during untreated psychotic episodes, committed theft offenses that were later vacated in 2022 for procedural errors. She raised two U.S. citizen daughters, one a working architect and the other currently a law student who is financially dependent on her, and has been recognized in her community for a television and radio show promoting African culture. For 13 years she complied with all ICE reporting requirements under a grant of Withholding of Removal, with a family-based petition still pending. On September 22, 2026, she was abruptly taken into custody at a routine ICE check-in and told she would be removed to Ghana, a country to which she has no stated ties, without being given notice or a chance to raise her fear of persecution there. A federal judge found that her re-detention without a hearing or changed circumstances violated due process, that she could not be removed to a third country without an opportunity to seek protection, and that her continued detention was unlawful because her removal was not reasonably foreseeable, ordering her immediate release.
