ICE agents have been asking detained immigrants whether they voted as noncitizens, and in several states have gone door to door questioning people about their citizenship and voting history. A federal judge ruled this door-to-door tactic illegal, though the Trump administration is expected to appeal. Confirmed cases of noncitizen voting remain extremely rare, with most involving lawful permanent residents who mistakenly believed they were eligible to vote.
