Federal agents use chemicals, non-lethal rounds at Broadview ICE facility protests
On September 26, 2025, federal agents used chemical agents including pepper balls and tear gas against over 100 protesters gathered outside an ICE detention facility in Broadview, Illinois. The protest was organized to demonstrate against detention conditions and show support for detainees. Following the confrontation, 11 people were taken into custody, with five subsequently facing federal charges including assault on federal officers. Broadview Mayor Katrina R. Thompson sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security requesting intervention, citing dangers to residents and public safety personnel from chemical agents that can travel hundreds of feet, and noting that a gate constructed by the agency across Beech Street is blocking emergency access.
