Three witnesses to fatal ICE shooting pressured to self-deport, allegedly silencing investigation
Three coworkers and the brother of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who witnessed the fatal shooting, were detained by ICE and are being pressured to sign paperwork for self-deportation, according to Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens. Proaño stated that the men "hold the key to what actually happened" and that ICE is "trying to get rid of them as witnesses." The tactic of removing potential crime witnesses from the country has disrupted criminal prosecutions across the country, according to a House Judiciary Committee report, and LULAC has called for the release of body-worn camera footage, surveillance, radio communications, and witness statements to independently verify ICE's account of the incident.
