US weighs ad campaign urging more Afrikaners to seek refugee status
Oct 15, 2026
Country of origin: South Africa
The U.S. State Department is considering a roughly $335,000 research and advertising campaign in South Africa to encourage more white Afrikaners to apply for refugee resettlement in the U.S. The effort follows a February 2025 executive order prioritizing Afrikaner refugees over the broader, suspended refugee program, based on claims of racial discrimination that the South African government and experts dispute. Despite online applications opening in November 2025, Afrikaner refugee numbers have been lower than expected, prompting the proposed focus groups, surveys, and a six-month digital campaign.
