Serious illness

People with cancer, kidney failure, or other serious illness in custody

These documented cases describe detained people with diabetes, cancer, kidney failure, or other serious conditions, in facilities across states including Texas, Florida, Colorado, and Louisiana, who say staff withheld medication or delayed treatment, leading to hospitalizations, deportations to third countries, or death. First documented in January 2025, the pattern became recurring the next month and has held a roughly steady share of reported cases since, continuing in facilities and deportation outcomes through late 2026.

First documented Jan 2025, recurring since Feb 2025.

Share of each month's well-documented stories, Jan 2025 to Oct 2026. Volume is not shown: coverage grew over the record, shares did not have to.
